Handy Guide to Fencing

8 min

Is this your first-time putting up a new fence? Or do you just need a helpful refresher? Well look no further than this handy guide on all aspects of the fencing job from panels and posts to fence care.

In this guide, we will look at the different types of fence panels you can purchase, the variety of posts you can use and how to fit them. We will also look at other fencing accessories such as gravel boards, fence rails and post mix.

Finally, we will look at how you can treat your fence to keep it looking fresh!

Fence Panels

We stock 2 types of fence panel here at Branch Bros:

Premier Waney Lap Panels

The Premier Waney Lap Panels are a traditional 12 baton panel with 18" x 50" top and bottom rail. Our panels are treated with preservatives after manufacture to provide an attractive appearance and prolong life.

  • They are of high quality and able to provide complete privacy.
  • They are easy to install.
  • The panels are robust and long lasting.

Premier Featheredge Panels

A traditional 'super close' boarded design. Superior back and side framing proving a strong panel, clad with feather edge boards. Strong and great value for money. Designed to fit standard 100mm x 100mm concrete slotted posts.

  • Provides strength, privacy and longevity for your garden.
  • They are easy to install.
  • The panels are of high quality and are long lasting.

Size Chart

All fence panels come in 4 different sizes:

  • W1830mm x H900mm (6ft x 3ft)
  • W1830mm x H1200mm (6ft x 4ft)
  • W1830mm x H1500mm (6ft x 5ft)
  • W1830mm x H1830mm (6ft x 6ft)

The size you choose is your own personal preference, however, the size will affect which posts you will need to get. Lets have a look at what you're going to need below.

Fence Posts (and how to fit them)

We supply a choice of either timber or concrete posts at Branch Bros.

Timber Fence Posts

These posts come in 2 sizes and multiple lengths:

  • Timber Fence Post 1.5M x 75MM x 75MM (5ft x 3” x 3”)
  • Timber Fence Post 1.8M x 75MM x 75MM (6ft x 3” x 3”)
  • Timber Fence Post 2.1M x 75MM x 75MM (7ft x 3” x 3”)
  • Timber Fence Post 2.4M x 75MM x 75MM (8ft x 3” x 3”)
  • Timber Fence Post 1.8M x 100MM x 100MM (6ft x 4” x 4”)
  • Timber Fence Post 2.4M x 100MM x 100MM (8ft x 4” x 4”)
  • Timber Fence Post 3.0M x 100MM x 100MM (10ft x 4” x 4”)
  • Timber Fence Post 2.4M x 75MM x 100MM (8ft x 3” x 4”)

These posts can be secured by using Fast Set Post Mix, which will require you to dig the hole to the correct depth (we advise around 1.5/2ft deep) and width relevant to the post size (if you have a 6ft tall fence, then we advise to purchase an 8ft post with a 2ft depth hole). You must then fill the hole with approx. a third of the depth with water and place the post in the hole. Then you need to pour in the PostMix evenly around the post until no standing water is visible. Position and level the post as required. Setting will take place in 5-10 minutes.

Another way of fitting timber posts would be to use either Fence Post Spikes or Fence Post Support Bolt Downs.

The Fence Post Spike hammers down into the soil, then you place the post inside and tighten the bolt to secure the post.

The Fence Post Support Bolt Down is used when putting a post onto a concrete base such as a slab or concrete floor. You would drill the floor in the relevant position and then fix the Fence Post Support Bolt Down in with concrete anchor bolts to secure it to the floor.

Concrete Fence Posts

We keep a variety of concrete slotted posts such as:

  • Concrete Slotted Post Intermediate 1830MM (6ft)
  • Concrete Slotted Post Intermediate 2135MM (7ft)
  • Concrete Slotted Post Intermediate 2440MM (8ft)
  • Concrete Slotted Post Intermediate 2745MM (9ft)
  • Concrete Slotted Corner Post 2440MM (8ft)
  • Concrete Slotted End Post 2440MM (8ft)
  • Recessed Concrete Post 2515MM

The best way to fix these would be by using PostMix which has already been explained how to do earlier in the guide.

Gravel Boards, Rails and Boards

In this section, we will look at the various fencing accessories that you will likely need should you be building your fence.

Gravel Boards

We stock both timber and concrete gravel boards at branch bros including:

  • Timber Gravel Board 22MM x 150MM x 1.83M (6ft)
  • Timber Gravel Board 22MM x 150MM x 2.4M (8ft)
  • Timber Gravel Board 22MM x 150MM x 3.0M (10ft)
  • Timber Gravel Board 22MM x 150MM x 3.6M (12ft)
  • Timber Gravel Board 22MM x 200MM x 3.6M (12ft)
  • Concrete Recessed Gravel Board 1830MM x 150MM (6ft x 6”)
  • Concrete Recessed Gravel Board 1830MM x 305MM (6ft x 12”)
  • Concrete Gravel Board 3000MM x 150MM x 50MM (10ft)

What is a gravel board you ask? A gravel board is a piece of wood or concrete that goes under your fence panels. The gravel board sits on top of the ground beneath your fence. The main function of gravel boards is to keep fence panels off the ground which ensures the panels don’t come into contact with grass, plants, or the damp ground which protects the panels.

Fence/Cant Rails

We stock both Fence and Cant Rails in various sizes which include:

  • Timber Fence Rail 38MM x 88MM x 2.4M (8ft)
  • Timber Fence Rail 38MM x 88MM x 3.6M (12ft)
  • Timber Cant Rail ex 47MM x 125MM x 2.4M (8ft)
  • Timber Cant Rail ex 47MM x 125MM x 3.0M (8ft)

Fence rails and Cant rails are usually installed between or across posts and are often what the featheredge boards are affixed to when making your own fence rather than using premade panels. All fences will have a top and bottom rail. One general rule is to have a horizontal rail for every 61cm (2ft) in height. For a 1830mm (6ft) fence, this would mean three rails.

Featheredge Boards

An alternative to using panels is to use featheredge boards and make the panel yourself. You will mainly use this if you want a longer fence between posts or a taller fence as they come in multiple sizes such as:

  • Premium Featheredge Board 1.65M x 125MM (5 1/2ft)
  • Premium Featheredge Board 1.8M x 125MM (6ft)
  • Premium Featheredge Board 1.8M x 150MM (6ft)
  • Premium Featheredge Board 2.4M x 150MM (8ft)
  • Premium Featheredge Board 3.0M x 150MM (10ft)

Everything in this list is already pre-treated and ready to go from the off, however, you may want to apply additional treatment to ensure the fence lasts as long as possible. We shall discuss the options for treatment below.

Fence Treatment

We supply various wood treatments at Branch Bros. The best option that you will need for a new fence, however, would be our Cuprinol Fence Paint. We do 3 types:

  • Less Mess Fence Care
  • 5 Year Ducksback
  • Garden Shades

Less Mess Fence Care

Less Mess Fence Care has been specially developed to colour and protect sheds, fences and other rough sawn garden wood. Its special pigments ensure a rich colour and even coverage in just one coat.

Less Mess Fence Care will take 1-2 coats, 1 paint tin will cover 5M² per litre and will dry in 3 hours. Please allow 3 hours between coats.

5 Year Ducksback

Cuprinol Ducksback has an advanced, wax enriched and non-drip formulation, that colours and weatherproofs sheds and fences for up to 5 years. Cuprinol Ducksback is quick drying, low odour.

This paint will require at least 2 coats, possibly 3 coats. There is a 2-4 hour dry time and will require re-coating after the dry time. The coverage is the same as the Less Mess Fence Care at 5M² per litre.

Garden Shades

Cuprinol Garden Shades has been specially developed to colour and protect sheds, fences and other garden wood. Its special pigments ensure a rich colour and allow the natural texture of the woodgrain to shine through. It can also be applied on terracotta, brick and stone, to bring beautiful colours to the rest of the garden.

This paint is used more if you want a vibrant colour added to your fence instead of the standard brown/green fence paint.

This paint requires at least 2-3 coats and there is a 4 hour dry time. Coats must be reapplied on the same day, no longer than 8 hours apart. If this is not possible then you may have to lightly sand down the surface before recoating to ensure adhesion.

This paint has a coverage of 10M² per litre.

And that is the end of our guide on fencing, we hope you have learned a thing or two on what you need to put up a new fence. If you have any more questions, then please don’t hesitate to contact us either online, email or via a phone call.

Good luck!
